I’m looking forward to this Wednesday’s CCC for a number of reasons. The chance to meet new people, pick up from conversations started last week and of course have a couple of pots of coffee all to myself while enjoying the view.
Mostly though I want to talk to Toby and everyone else about this concept of a Network of Networks that some of you will have heard about.
Right now there’s a lot of interesting small get-togethers happening up and down the UK that broadly speaking overlap quite a bit. CCC is one of them, but only last Friday I got the chance to wander from the Social Media Cafe to Mike Butcher’s Techbrunch and inevitably bumped into people talking about Mobile Monday and the like.
The Mobile Monday global network is a good touchstone here. People from all over the world coming together and creating a shared experience. The Network of Networks is a chance to do something similar, but also finds a way to bring together people and events that are usually quite disparate.
On Friday I also mentioned the online Feminist movement’s Carnival approach to sharing content and as ever am using a piece of fiction (Warren Ellis’ Global Frequency) as a hook for what’s possible here. We’re not out to save the world, but we can create something that benefits all our time here.
We want to find a way to tap into the few things we all have in common to push everyone forward (and part of that push will involve a fair amount of pulling in order to compel a coordinated movement in the same direction I expect).
Wednesday gives us a chance to talk around this subject, but also nail down a name for what we’re attempting to do. Once we have that name we can raise a flag (or at least buy a domain) and start creating the space we need to ensure we have something tangible come the summer.
